Trains in Mexico

Mexico has more than 20'000 km of railway network, traversing the country from north to south. However passenger trains on long-distance were almost entirely suspended after the privatization of the railway after 1998. In most parts run only goods trains.

Since then there have been numerous initiatives to restart passenger service, but so far none was implemented.

The only connection with daily passenger service is the "Chepe" (Chihuahua-Pacific Railway) from to on the Pacific coast through the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre. It travels 653 kilometers, crosses 37 bridges and 86 tunnels and climbs to a height of over 2400 meters over sea level. It is considered by many the most scenic rail across the continent. Not only it is visited by rail fans from all over the world, but also it is used for transportation of locals and goods. (timetable and map). It is operated by Ferromex, a private rail consortium, that operates the largest rail network in Mexico.

There exist also some tourist trains. The "Tequila Express" runs between Guadalajara and Amatitán on Saturdays and Sundays. Between Tijuana and Tecate runs a train every 15 days. By the end of 2009 a tourist train from Mexico City to Teotihuacan should be runnig.
